Here are some techniques that might be used by the lecturer in class to support the development of critical thinking.

The lecturer has delivered a short lecture with multimedia resources on this week's topic in the unit she is teaching to first year students. The lecturer takes a research-minded approach to her teaching and wants to make her lectures lively and engaging and to create a learning environment that supports learning and understanding. Using techniques from a model that she has read recently by Golding (2011) the lecturer asks questions during a teaching session such as:

Why might that be? What explanations or reasons are offered by the authors you have read? (Students are invited to give reasons)

When students offer possible explanations, based on their reading, the lecturer might ask more questions to draw out more learning, for example:

Can you explain in more detail what you mean? Can you give an example from your reading or from your practice? (Students are invited to clarify and explain)

Marija and Pavinder are students in this class and have each given an example from the reading or from their practice experience; the lecturer then might then ask:

What are the differences and similarities between the ideas that Marija and Pavinder have offered?

Opening up the class discussion further she might then ask:

What are the different perspectives offered in the reading that you have undertaken? Which arguments put forward in the literature are strongest/weakest and why? (Students are invited to compare)
